Mountain Lions, like many predators, are endangered, especially here in California. They are under pressure from
- habitat loss
- increasing urbanization
- community separation and dispersal
As the numbers fall, genetic diversity is lost and threatens this key apex predator, which we certainly need for a balanced ecosystem, including maintenance of a healthy deer population, for which mountain lion numbers are key. As the sixth extinction progresses, we continue to lose species worldwide.
California has a lot of people who care, so we have an opportunity with the state government. The Department of Fish and Wildlife has, of its own volition, recommended that mountain lions in the Central Coast and Southern California be listed as threatened under the iconic California Endangered Species Act (CESA), which allows the state to offer key protections, mechanisms, and funding to protect populations in those areas, maintaining sensitive bridges that will hopefully sustain the populations.
Why sign the Humane World of Animals?
Petitions don’t always have to be in protest. We can always show our earnest support for a cause. Preserving mountain lion populations across the state is a matter of duty and pride to all Californians, and in fact, nature lovers and environmentally conscious folks everywhere.
So note, you don’t have to be a California resident to sign the petition!
Therefore, I hope you have read this far and will read the petition and consider signing the petition to let the Department of Fish and Wildlife know that you support this important classification change for mountain lions.
It takes just a few seconds!
